BALTIMORE — Ravens coach John Harbaugh said the team has agreed to terms with Jason Pierre-Paul pending a physical, and he expects the veteran edge rusher to reach game readiness quickly once he arrives.

The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms with veteran pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul. The Ravens announced the deal Friday and said it was pending a physical. Pierre-Paul had 2 1/2 sacks in 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. He was with the New York Giants from 2010-17 before joining the Buccaneers. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Pierre-Paul’s daughter’s birthday is Saturday, but he’d be arriving after that. Harbaugh also said receiver Devin Duvernay has been cleared to play Sunday at New England following a concussion.

The LPGA and financial giant Mizuho Americas have announced a new tournament will be played in New Jersey next year at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. The 72-hole tournament will be called the Mizuho Americas Open and it will take place May 29- June 4. The event will have a purse of $2.75 million. The Mizuho Americas Open will be the first time Liberty National will host the LPGA Tour, after hosting several world-class events, including the Presidents Cup and multiple PGA Tour playoff stops.

PITTSBURGH — Make no mistake, Mike Tomlin has never met a moral victory he liked.

Major League Baseball has suspended three minor league pitchers after they tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Melvi Acosta, Jendersson Caraballo and Braudin Ciprian each tested positive for Stanozolol. Acosta, a 27-year-old right-hander with Minnesota’s Triple-A affiliate in St. Paul, was suspended for 80 games. Caraballo, a 22-year-old right-hander on the roster for the Dominican Summer League White Sox, received a 60-game suspension. Ciprian, a 21-year-old right-hander on the roster with the Dominican Summer League Brewers, also was suspended for 60 games.

SAN DIEGO — When the bat of Albert Pujols caught fire in early August, and it appeared the St. Louis Cardinals slugger would make an improbable 11th-hour run to 700 homers, Mark McGwire began tracking his long-ago teammate through the MLB app and tuning into as many Pujols plate appearances …

Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers will be working without some of their top receivers Sunday when the seven-time Super Bowl winner and four-time MVP face off. The injury report released Friday ruled Green Bay’s Sammy Watkins and Tampa Bay’s Chris Godwin out for Sunday’s game at Tampa. The Buccaneers already were planning to play without suspended wide receiver Mike Evans. Other receivers could be missing as well. Tampa Bay’s Russell Gage, Julio Jones and Breshad Perriman and Green Bay’s Randall Cobb and Christian Watson are listed as questionable. Packers tight end Marcedes Lewis also is questionable.

There’s plenty to like about a matchup between quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert. Not only are they at the top of the list for league’s best hair, but both are the leaders of their respective franchises. The biggest question though going into Sunday’s matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers is if they will face each other for the first time. Herbert has been limited in practices this week due to fractured rib cartilage. The injury happened after he took a hit from Kansas City’s Michael Danna during the fourth quarter of last Thursday’s  27-24 loss to the Chiefs.

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy tried to be as tactful as possible.

Zach Wilson is getting closer to playing again for the New York Jets. That means Joe Flacco’s time as the starting quarterback is coming to a close. It could be next week. Or maybe a few weeks. When Wilson’s knee is totally healthy, he’ll be back under center even if the Jets are flourishing under Flacco. The game at Pittsburgh in Week 4 will be the earliest Wilson would return. Flacco is doing all he can to establish himself as the quarterback of right now. The 37-year-old veteran led the Jets to a stunning 31-30 victory at Cleveland last Sunday.

Cincinnati is looking to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2019 when it opened 0-11 before beating New York in Week 13. The Bengals got down by at least two touchdowns in both of their losses this season and fought their way back to the verge of winning. Dallas won last week’s game on a 50-yard field goal as time expired. The Jets snapped a 13-game losing streak in the month of September going back to 2018 with their 31-30 victory at Cleveland last week. New York was down by 13 with 1:55 remaining but Joe Flacco and the Jets rallied to win.

Spain hosts Switzerland in Zaragoza seeking a win to remain in first place of its group before a possible winner-take-all clash with Portugal for a spot in next June’s Nations League final four. Spain can clinch their group if it beats Switzerland and Portugal loses against the Czech Republic in Prague. Erling Haaland’s Norway, Scotland and Israel are well placed to earn promotion to the Nations League top tier heading into the latest round of games in League B.

Jacoby Brissett is doing everything the Cleveland Browns had hoped. The veteran quarterback has provided quality play and solid leadership through three games as the Browns wait for starter Deshaun Watson to return from his 11-game suspension. Brissett has been pin-point accurate in Cleveland's past two games. On Thursday, he threw two touchdown passes as the Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17 and distanced themselves from a brutal loss to the New York Jets four days earlier. Brissett has no illusions about his role in holding Watson's spot, but he's also enjoying every moment while trying to keep the Browns in contention.

Rasmus Hojgaard has moved six shots clear at the French Open after posting a 6-under 65 in the second round. The Danish player and overnight leader had seven birdies at Le Golf National outside Paris to move to 15 under overall. His only blemish was a bogey on the fifth hole. Frenchman Paul Barjon’s 3-under 68 moved him up from third to second. Barjon holed an eagle putt from 61 feet on the 14th hole and pleased the crowd as they stayed with him. South African George Coetzee fired a 66 to push himself up to third place, one stroke behind Barjon at 8 under.

Cleveland Browns starting linebacker and team captain Anthony Walker Jr. will miss the rest of the season after tearing a quadriceps tendon in Thursday night’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Walker is one of the Browns' emotional leaders and the defensive signal caller. Walker was injured while defending a screen pass. His legs buckled awkwardly under him as he was blocked by Steelers right tackle lineman Chukwuma Okorafor, who then fell on Walker as he laid face down. Walker re-signed as a free agent for a second season with Cleveland in March. Jacob Phillips will move into the starting lineup and take over play calls.

Roger Federer is bidding farewell to his tennis career with one last contest before he heads into retirement at age 41. He is scheduled to play a doubles match with rival Rafael Nadal for Team Europe in the Laver Cup against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World in London on Friday night. This marks the end of an illustrious career that included 20 Grand Slam titles and a role as a statesman for tennis. Federer was the last to emerge from a tunnel on Friday leading out to the black court when the players from both squads were introduced before the initial singles matchup of the three-day team event. Fans rose for a lengthy standing ovation and raised their phone cameras to capture the moment.

The governing body for Formula One says IndyCar star Colton Herta will not be granted the Super License that would permit the American to join F1 next season. Red Bull has interest in the 22-year-old Californian and was considering Herta for a seat at AlphaTauri. The Red Bull junior team has already said that Pierre Gasly will return next season and Yuki Tsunoda received a contract extension earlier this week. But AlphaTauri would be willing to release Gasly for Herta. However, he's eight points short of a Super License and the FIA denied him an exemption.

Fans looking to watch Aaron Judge’s pursuit of the AL home run record or Albert Pujols chase 700 homers live Friday night will need to do it via streaming. Apple TV+ has exclusive coverage of both games as part of its “Friday Night Baseball” package. The games were selected and announced in early August. When games air nationally, it also means other networks can't do live cut-ins. ESPN and MLB Network did that earlier when games were only available on the team’s regional networks. Fans can access both games Friday night on Apple TV+ for free and without the need for a subscription.

Celtics center Robert Williams III is expected to miss at least two months after undergoing surgery on the left knee that caused him to miss time during Boston’s NBA Finals run last season. The team said the arthroscopic procedure to remove loose bodies and address swelling was a success. He is expected to resume basketball activities in 8-12 weeks. Also, forward Danilo Gallinari had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. He is expected to miss the entire season.

Changing the way the so-called “transition take fouls” are officiated this season won’t keep them out of the NBA game. In fact, the league thinks that sort of play now may make the game better. The long-awaited rule change — one of the points of education for the NBA going into this season — was a major talking point this week for referees. They gathered for their preseason meetings now that training camps around the league are about to open. There are other emphasis areas, but the take-foul changes may be the most significant.

A protester has lit a portion of the court and his arm on fire during a match at the Laver Cup tennis event. The episode happened hours before Roger Federer was scheduled to play for the final time before retiring. The activist briefly delayed the action at the start of the second set of Stefanos Tsitsipas’ 6-2, 6-1 victory for Team Europe over Diego Schwartzman of Team World at the O2 Arena on Friday. The person was wearing a white T-shirt with a message about private jets and made his way onto the black court to sit down near the net. He eventually was carried away by security guards.

The Buffalo Bills have ruled out starting safety Micah Hyde and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips for their game at the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Hyde is out after hurting his neck in a 41-7 win over Tennessee on Monday, while Phillips injured his hamstring against the Titans.  The Bills lineup could be thinned further because of uncertainty regarding the status of starting cornerback Dane Jackson and starting safety Jordan Poyer (foot). Jackson sustained a neck injury against Tennessee after his head snapped back in a collision with a teammate.

Puerto Rico captain Pamela Rosado hopes the team’s first victory in the women’s World Cup can provide a small bit of joy to the island that's been ravaged by Hurricane Fiona. The island’s government said some 62% of 1.47 million customers remained without power Thursday. A third of customers, or more than 400,000, did not yet have water service. The team was winless in its three games in the 2018 World Cup that came a year after Hurricane Maria hit and devastated Puerto Rico. Now the team has a chance to advance to the quarterfinals with potentially one more victory in its next three games.

The governing body of track and field has acted against suspected systematic cheating in results from qualifying events for the Tokyo Olympics and age manipulation of athletes up to 20 years ago. World Athletics says seven of its national members agreed to be on a “manipulation watch list.” The countries on the list are Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkey, Uzbekistan. Results from lower-level meets in those countries will not now be accepted. It followed investigations of 17 suspicious results to get Olympic qualifying standards. Medalists from China and Saudi Arabia were stripped of results at world age-group championships from 2002 to 2005. They were overage and had falsified entries.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the Football Association in relation to an incident that saw the Manchester United forward apparently knock a phone out of an Everton fan’s hand at a Premier League match in April. The governing body says it is alleged that Ronaldo’s conduct was improper and/or violent. Ronaldo received a police caution in August after being interviewed by officers in relation to an allegation of assault and criminal damage following the incident at Goodison Park on April 9. Footage was posted online of Ronaldo appearing to knock the supporter’s mobile phone on to the ground as he walked toward the tunnel following United’s 1-0 loss.

Daichi Kamada scored following Weston McKennie’s giveaway in the 24th minute, Kaoru Mitoma added a goal in the 88th and Japan beat an lackluster and injury-depleted United States 2-0 in the Americans’ next-to-last World Cup warmup. U.S. star Christian Pulisic did not dress because of an unspecified injury. The 14th-ranked Americans already were without Tim Weah, Yunus Musah, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson and Zack Steffen, and Miles Robinson will miss the World Cup. The Americans failed to get a single shot on goal. They have one win, five losses and four draws in their last 10 road games. The game was in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The Zambian soccer federation has opened an investigation into claims of sexual abuse in the women’s game and says it is taking accusations made on social media serious enough to ask police for help with the inquiry. The Football Association of Zambia says there is no record of an official complaint being made. There have been accusations that players on the women’s national team have been victims of abuse at the hands of coaching staff. Zambia will play at the Women's World Cup next year for the first time. No one has been identified in the case.

Portugal plays the Czech Republic in the Nations League on Saturday with Cristiano Ronaldo’s team hoping to set up a showdown with Spain to decide who advances to the Final Four tournament. Ronaldo is one of seven Portugal players who are only one yellow card from a suspension that would rule them out of their final group game against Spain. Spain leads Group A2 with eight points. That's one more than Portugal. A victory in Prague would mean that Portugal has the chance to finish top when the Iberian neighbors meet in Braga on Tuesday. Spain hosts Switzerland on Saturday.

Two players from Russia and two from China advanced to the semifinals of the Pan Pacific Open. Liudmila Samsonova eliminated 2017 Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and will next face Zhang Shuai. Zhang defeated Petra Martic 7-5, 6-2. Samsonova also beat current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the first round. Veronika Kudermetova beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (8), 6-1 to advance. She will take on 19-year-old Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. Zheng defeated American player Claire Liu 6-4, 7-5.

“No lead is safe in the NFL” is more than a cliche this season. Three teams overcame fourth-quarter deficits of at least 13 points to win last week for the first time in 30 years. The Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins made history by both rallying from 20-point halftime deficits to win on the same day for the first time. Big comebacks and close finishes have become a trend. Already, 12 games were decided by three points or fewer, most through the first two weeks. Eight teams have overcome a deficit of at least 10 points to win or tie.

Chris Buescher's win at Bristol last week marked the first time in this version of NASCAR's playoffs that drivers who are not racing for the championship swept the three races of the first round. Buescher wants to play spoiler again Sunday. The second round of the playoffs start at Texas Motor Speedway, and that is the home track for Buescher. Chase Elliott opens the second round as the points leader. Austin Cindric is ranked last in the 12-driver field. The field will be trimmed by four drivers after this three-race round.

A plain white helmet like the pope’s skullcap. The Holy See’s crossed keys seal stamped on his white and yellow jersey over his heart. Dutch-born cyclist Rien Schuurhuis will carry an enormous sense of duty when he races for the Vatican in Sunday’s road race at the cycling world championships in Wollongong, Australia. It marks a first in the city-state’s increasing use of sports as an instrument of dialogue, peace and solidarity. Schuurhuis previously raced on the UCI’s Continental Circuit. That is one level below the elite World Tour. He qualified for the Vatican team because he is married to Australia’s ambassador to the Holy See.

Spanish soccer is in turmoil after 15 players on the women’s national team pulled out of the squad saying their coach has “significantly” affected their “emotional state” and their health. The players cited coach Jorge Vilda as the reason for the problems. The list of players did not include Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas. Three players said earlier this month that there was “widespread discontentment" on the team. The Spanish soccer federation has defended the professionalism of Vilda. Federation official Ana Álvarez says there have been no incidents of verbal abuse by Vilda.
