“We want to build a land art space that everyone can participate in, to have a dialogue with the heaven and earth, and the natural landscape of Zhejiang, and provide a roaming environment for everyone in the modern city,” states Ma Yansong.
For the newly announced Quzhou Sports Campus, Ma Yansong and his design team at MAD together with landscape architects PWP Landscape Architecture, EADG Pan Asia International, and Beijing Yunhai Tiancheng Landscape Design Consulting Co., Ltd. believe that if the attributes of urban public space and sports buildings are superimposed, sports competitions and the daily sports of people’s life should be brought to the same interface.
First of all, the site is an urban public space that is connected with nature, is open, shared and belongs to the citizens. The metaphorical competition and power of the “arena” itself can be “disappeared” in the landscape through the construction itself and construction techniques. The design of MAD combines the function of the stadium with the natural landscape, creating a land art landscape in the center of the city that resembles a volcano and a mirror lake. The buildings in the park break away from the way traditional stadiums highlight the strength of the structure and transform it into a more intrinsic, understated beauty. The interior and exterior of the building are connected with nature everywhere, and people in it are immersed in nature and feel the spiritual pursuit driven by the artistic conception of heaven and earth.
After the overall completion, Quzhou Sports Park will become the largest earth-covered building complex in the world. The stadium of 30,000 people, shaped like a crater, crawls on the ground, the huge stand structure is hidden, and the building volume disappears. The façade is covered with green plants and becomes the landscape itself. The white lines carve out new curves, some of which actually carry the function of a pedestrian walkway. The slope of the façade just becomes a new place for citizens to exercise, climb and climb high; the lawn on the gentle slope can also be a place for people to rest after exercising. Six groups of concrete column walls support the entire stadium.
The exposed wood grain fair-faced concrete wall abandons the inner and outer decorative layers, which is both the structure and the building itself. The special-shaped hyperboloid concrete shapes the entrances and exits of the venue. The main entrances and exits from the north and south are arranged in an orderly arrangement of circles of arches, with a maximum span of nearly 40 meters. The purity and simplicity of the concrete material itself, and the details of the design soften the volume of the stadium, while creating a rhythmic spatial rhythm. Above the concrete structure is a “crown” weather cover supported by a steel structure.
The wind and rain cover is supported on the stand by only 9 landing points, and the maximum span between the landing points reaches 95 meters, allowing the line of sight to penetrate inside and outside the stadium, and the space appears more transparent and open. Different from the design method of the traditional canopy, the light-transmitting membrane material is wrapped outside the cantilevered space truss of the steel structure, allowing the wind and rain cover to float above the earth like clouds. The fusion of artistry and function of form empowerment is realized here. The upper surface of the stadium canopy adopts a semi-transparent PTFE membrane structure, and the lower surface adopts PTFE with micropores. This structural design and material selection enhance the noise reduction performance of the canopy.
The stadium’s signage system was designed by MAD and Kenya Hara’s team at Hara Design Institute. The seats in the grandstand area are not divided by traditional linear areas, but closely follow the overall design concept of “landscape,” with the theme of “sunlight shining through the gaps of leaves,” and are organically divided by five gradient colors. Thirty thousand shades of green seats are evenly arranged above the saddle-shaped grandstand, creating a fresh and continuous visual effect. Except for the stands and the infield, other functional spaces of the stadium are located under the landscaped ground.
MAD and landscape architects specially selected grass species that are more suitable for the local area, suitable for multi-season, low maintenance and water saving for Quzhou. The temperature fluctuations in the interior spaces of the building are reduced thanks to the planting layer covering the surface. At the same time, covering soil is also conducive to the integrated design of buildings and sponge cities. When it rains, it absorbs, stores, seeps, and purifies water, and when necessary, the stored water is released and used. natural disasters and other aspects have good resilience. The concrete materials used in the stadium are all locally produced, which minimizes the transportation of steel and other decorative materials from other places during the construction process.
In October 2021, the opening ceremony of the Fourth Zhejiang Sports Conference was held in Quzhou Stadium, marking the official opening of the stadium. The stadium can not only host national events, but also serve as a large-scale cultural performance venue for citizens. In addition to hosting activities, the venue is also open to the public on a daily basis, and citizens are free to visit, stay or engage in daily sports. Quzhou Sports Park covers an area of about 700,000 square meters, with a total construction area of about 340,000 square meters for the first and second phases, including a stadium that can accommodate 30,000 people, a stadium for 10,000 people, a swimming pool, a national sports complex, outdoor sports venues, technology Pavilions, Youth Palaces, Hotels, Businesses, etc. Ten thousand people gymnasium, swimming pool, and national sports complex (three halls) are adjacent to each other, located on the northeast side of the park, all under the ground cover.
Above the ground is an undulating “mountain,” with intertwined white pedestrian paths winding along the surface of the mountain. People walk in it, with wide or narrow line of sight, moving with different scenery, and inadvertently interacting and talking with the environment. The large skylights at the “top of the mountain” and the “foot of the mountain” bring natural light into the space, achieve energy saving and deepen the connection between the interior and exterior environments.
The stadium of the first phase of Quzhou Sports Park has been completed and put into use; the underground part of the third hall has been completed, and the above-ground part is under construction in an orderly manner; the overall planning of the second phase and the buildings with different functions are in the process of deepening design.
